Making meaningful connections in a new city can be a tiresome, but ultimately rewarding endeavor. With so many opportunities, it can be hard to navigate what may or may not be a good fit for you. As with anything, you don’t want to invest a lot of time into something that may not pay dividends in the long run. Unfortunately, failure is part of the process, but don’t let that keep you from venturing out. Today we are going to look at some ways that you can start getting involved in your new community that can lead to meaningful relationships.
A quick Google search on the definition of community gave me a good place to start when I began thinking about this topic. Here is what I found:
- a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.
- a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.
This is important to keep in mind as you are dedicating your time to this process. Looking to form relationships with people who have similar interests, and passions are more likely to produce the connections that you are desiring.
Let’s now look at some ideas to move forward.
Athletics- Whether it is cheering on the IHCC Warriors at a basketball game, or signing up for Adult Softball, recreation can easily put you around others that have an appreciation for the same types of things that you do. Staying on top of the YMCA sports programs, joining a fitness center, or paying attention to Ottumwa Schools calendar of events can help you learn about recreational opportunities in the area.
The Fine Arts- Maybe you prefer theatre, or attending a musical performance. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and show off your talent. Again, you don’t have to settle for just being a spectator, although if you are the kind that gets anxiety being around new people, a spectator roll maybe a good place to start. I find it interesting how many people forget that the schools have great programs for the public to take advantage of. Just because you don’t have any kids at Evan’s Middle School, doesn’t mean you should not attend one of the plays they put on. Honestly, you’re missing out if you have never gone.
Volunteerism- This is one of my favorites. Who donates their time and energies to a cause they have no passion for? Not only is it rewarding to give back, donating your time to your new community is a great way to meat others who share the same passions that you have. You may want to even consider joining a civic organization to help you get connected to the right opportunities.
Take a Class- Having Indian Hills Community College right in our own backyard gives Ottumwa a wonderful resource to continue your education and meet people have similar interests and values as yourself.
Of course these are not the only way to start making connections as you make your transition to Ottumwa, but these will have greater potential for providing relationships that will last. Remember, that relationships are a two way street. If you are willing to put yourself out there, you are more likely to get noticed as opposed to being a silent observer.
